I’ve found myself with some free time lately to work on at least one of the ideas that has been bouncing around my head. I have created a web application that uses Google Maps to plot new retail construction of some of the larger retailers. It’s now online at Big Box Watch. Launching with over 100 developments that have been proposed or are now under construction.

Please take a look at it and let me know what you think. Pass the link on if you do enjoy it. I think people may enjoy knowing what is being constructed in their neighborhoods.

Also, I have moved all of my portfolio/resume stuff to robotic tom. I am available for hire!

Very cool ap. The visual is kinda creepy, so many big box stores. Would be cool to see a cross reference of existing stores. Not sure what qualifies as new store construction (broke ground, land leased/purchased?) but I thought I’d let you know that we have a new Home Depot going up in Santa Cruz County, CA. The city is Soquel and it’s on 41st ave. Next door to the Home Depot will be a new Best Buy.

First time commenting but I love your site!

Thank you for the comments, and thank you for looking at Big Box Watch!

The amount of stores that are being built is just fascinating. Between Kohl’s and JCPenney alone, they are building 750 new stores between 2006 and 2011. It’s pretty wild.

All of the sites listed are in various phases of construction – from proposal to actual on going construction. Since you mentioned it, I will look into adding a way to list the phase of construction, to give a better idea of the overall life of the project. Thanks for the idea!

I’ll add the Home Depot in Santa Cruz to the site!

    Thanks again.
